Every now and then, an online debate starts in one place and ends up somewhere you didn’t expect.
That’s what happened here. The debate started about divorce, family assets, homemakers, and whether a wife who helped build the household should be treated like she contributed nothing just because she didn’t bring home a traditional paycheck.

But then attorney and filmmaker Mike Cernovich stepped in and made a much bigger point that made a lot of people stop and think.
His point was about protecting your family while you’re still married, still building, and trying to keep the whole thing running smoothly and safely. If you’re a husband and father, you should be thinking ahead and putting money in your wife’s name, retirement accounts, your kids’ future, and anything that gives your family more protection if life suddenly goes sideways.
And then he got into exactly why this matters so much.
Because in America today, one bad car crash with the wrong person can destroy your entire life.
Here’s what kicked things off.
Hot take (for my bro audience): divorce CLEARLY SHOULD include splitting the family assets – as well as alimony for some period for real (ex) home-makers.
Your wife, on average, did 45-55% of the stuff that made the home, investments, social calendar, etc work while you loved each other. The compensation for that, in almost literally every healthy marriage, is that she has full access to joint checking etc DESPITE NOT conventionally working.
Saying wifey made a 0% contribution to what all this produced is batshit insane. But, it’s also a negative incentive – that would make saying home and doing what’s still the normal thing above working-class an insane risk.

And this was Mike’s response:
Husband should put money into his wife’s separate property each year. Roth IRA or ordinary IRA (depends on income obviously). 529’s for kids. Also every lawyer will tell you. You’re one car crash away from bankruptcy. The more you can get to your wife and kids now the better.

And after another X user asked Mike why somebody could be one car crash away from total financial ruin, this was Mike’s response:
Illegal alien crashes into you. He has no liability insurance. Say you carry uninsured motorist insurance. You should. How much are the limits of that? Not enough to cover a serious concussion, broken legs, physical therapy, lost wages, medical debt. This happens every day.

And Mike’s right to bring this up, because when you research the stats, it’s downright scary out there on the roads.
National Immigration Law Center:
Studies on unlicensed and uninsured drivers, often including unauthorized immigrants, show a significant impact on state insurance systems, with data suggesting up to 50% of undocumented immigrants may be uninsured.
That’s a nightmare scenario.
Imagine you’re driving to work, or picking up your kids, or even just heading to the grocery store, basically living your normal everyday life, and out of nowhere, some illegal with no insurance crashes into you. Maybe you did everything right, and you bought uninsured motorist coverage. Maybe you have health insurance, and you think you’re safe. But then all of a sudden, the bills start piling up anyway. Stuff like ER care, scans, surgery, physical therapy, lost wages, childcare help, long-term pain, maybe even legal fees.
And if the person who hit you has no insurance, no assets, and no way to pay, what’s going to happen? You’re going down faster than a sack of hammers.

That’s why this issue is so huge. This is a real-life financial risk that families can drive into, head-first, on any given day. Because, thanks to so many uninsured and unlicensed illegals on the road, it’s downright foolish to pretend this isn’t a serious public safety and financial risk. And it’s something not enough people are talking about or looking into.
